How The Children Learn
Glenfield Nursery School uses the Birth to Three Matters guidelines including the following six areas of learning.
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication, Language and Literacy Development
- Mathematical Development
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World
- Physical Development
- Creative Development
Regardless of when they start, each child will progress through our classes as they grow and develop their skills and understanding.
Baby Room
We have a large and comfortable Baby Room which provides a safe, happy and relaxed environment for young babies. We integrate our babies when they are walking and steady on their feet into Class 1A for further stimulation from 12-18 months of age.
Class 1
Takes children from 18 months old where they are transformed into toddlers, this is the start of their independence. This area provides stimulation through play and education. They are taught to use small knives and forks and sit properly at tables. They rapidly gain confidence within this safe and invigorating environment.

Class 2
Takes children from 2 years and at the age of 2 years our children are fully toilet trained, have mealtime social skills and become completely independent.
Throughout the nursery children are taught daily, Nursery Rhymes, Flashcards, Colours, Letters, Numbers and Shapes. This is done both in groups and individually.
Class 3
Here we further develop children's social and learning skills through play and formal teaching in groups. During their time in class 3, their concentration is expanded and children are encouraged to take pride in their work, in readiness to move on to class 4.
Class 4
We ensure childdren can recognise the letters of the alphabet, numbers 1 to 20 and can count up to at least 50, and often beyond. Whilst they are familiar with basic shapes, they will also be aware of more complex shapes such as the cylinder, cube and crescent.
We introduce the children to writing patterns and they learn to write their own names as well as simple words and numbers. The children are also taught to read simple words from the gin Reading Series.
In French sessions the children are taught simple words, greetings, colours, numbers and play games such as dominoes.
We have and excellent Dance and Drama teacher who puts many children through examinations where they obtain high marks.
Every Monday morning, the children have a Music lesson where they are taught about the beats and notes of music.
Class 5
This is the last year of the childrens nursery education and it is a period of great importance. They begin to feel big and knowledgeable, and being in the top class they like to help.
